Nothing Like a Fire To Make You Popular..

Posted By: David

So, last week I posted a piece over at Planet Green's website on the changing nature of our landscape, thanks to the fact that the West is burning up. It's now the second most “voted” on piece at Planet Green, just behind the life altering piece on Emeril's tips for making “green gumbo”... [Read More!]

Rarely Do I Catch The Daily Show In A Factual Error . . .

Posted By: Harold

So I will crow over this silly little mistake. The normally excellent Indecision2008 Blog has misidentified Senator Ben Cardin as the Senator from Maine in this blog post. He is, in fact, the Senator from Maryland.

This is important since Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, the Senators from Maine, (a) are women, (b) are Republicans, and (c) voted in favor of the FISA “compromise,” whereas Cardin voted against it. I shall leave it as an exercise to the reader which they think is the most important difference and whether either Cardin, Collins, or Snowe should feel offended that Indecision08 got them confused. Although I do agree with the main thrust of the blog entry that Ben Cardin is not nearly as sexy as Charlize Theron no matter what state he is from or his political party.

But in any event, I do think Indecision08 should run a correction.

(I promise to do real blogging again soon, just a bit busy at the moment.)

stay tuned . . .

Tropic Thunder's “Retard” Problem

Posted By: David

Perhaps you've been too busy trying to hold onto your mortgage to notice, but there's been a fair amount of controversy over actor/director Ben Stiller's comedy “Tropic Thunder”. Apparently some folks have an issue with use of the word “retards”- and the depiction of disabled people- in the film. Understandable... [Read More!]

What Does US News and World Reports Know Anyway?

Posted By: Harold

They're just STUPID! What do they know?.

USA Today has a much more intelligent article (alas, from before the ranking s were published), especially this quote:
“What made me come back? Don't be funny,” he says. “Everybody wants to come back to a reunion. That's what Princeton's made up of, people coming back to reunions.”
— Malcolm Wornock, Class of '25.

Tune every heart and every voice,
bid every care withdraw;
Let all with one accord rejoice,
in praise of Old Nassau.
In praise of Old Nassau we sing,
Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!
Our hearts will give while we shall live,
three cheers for Old Nassau.

Harvard. Feh.

When we have a First Lady whose an alumn they'll change their tune (and no, the fact that he went to Harvard Law does not count).

Stay tuned . . . . .

Fan mail from a flounder?

Posted By: John

Neutrino/Hadron-class Wetmachiner David Newsom, a producer/correspondent on “The G-Word” show on Discovery Channel's “Planet Green”, sent a message to his mail list the other day:

In its first few months, PLANET GREEN has had a bumpy start and taken some hits- many well deserved- but “G-Word” remains good, low-budget fun. It’s informative, breezy and democratic. We’re proud of it. For the noble few of you watching, their website is now under revision, and will be posting notices from some of its correspondents.

In an effort to get the word, out, I’m spamming the world about my new post. Feel free to use it as a point of entry to the site and shows. If you have criticism, fire away. They want and need it.

Note: The title of this post is from an old Rockie & Bullwinkle bit. Those of you too young to remember it ought to be ashamed of yourselves. And you kids get off my lawn!

Questions, Questions, Questions

Posted By: John

Like Harold, I've been on vacation this week --on the New Jersey shore, where the weather is perfect and the surf is fine. Which accounts for the sparseness-osity of the postings around here lately.

Anyway, I've been wondering: how many houses does John McCain own? How many rooms in all these houses, total? How many houses does his wife own? How much does he typically pay for a haircut, and how much for a pair of shoes?

Also, is he technically senile?

On vacation, you know, I guess one's thoughts tend to turn a tad philosophical.

Omnivorous Hippies

Posted By: John

Last nnight I went, with Dear Wife, to a big-ole “slow food” pot luck dinner at the Ag Hall, which is a big-ole barn out in a field where they have the County Fair every summer and the Christmas pageant every winter.

Michael Pollan, author of “The Omnivore's Dilemma”, gave a talk afterwards. Then a string band played. [Read More!]

Deep Thought about the New Yorker Cover

Posted By: John

So, the New Yorker mag has a cover depicting Barack & Michelle Obama in the White House, in which she's Angela Davis with a bandolier and rifle, he's an Indonesian Moslem, Osama Bin Ladin's portrait is on the wall, and the American flag is burning in the fireplace. As I'm the 23,452,998th person to point out, the satire is a little weak because it's not clear whether the Obamas are being mocked or if it's the people who circulate the Manchurian Candidate emails about them.

Whatever. It's a magazine cover. I was kinda annoyed by it at first, but now actually it makes me smile a little.

What I'm waiting for now is the New Yorker cover that does to St. John McCain what this cover does to St. Barack Obama. It would have to include McCain setting the aircraft carrier Forrestall on fire (& killing 134 sailors), making propaganda tapes for the North Vietnamese, deserting his first wife (disfigured in an accident) for a mega-wealthy heiress, and having senile dementia.
