“I don’t think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president."Au contraire, General Clark!
[James] Stockdale, like McCain, was a Navy aviator shot down over Vietnam and imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton. Like McCain, he was a brave man — in Stockdale’s case a Medal of Honor winner — who later rose to admiral. He served his nation with great courage and distinction.
In 1992, however, Stockdale was named by Ross Perot as his running mate on the Reform Party ticket. And on the campaign trail, the brave and honorable admiral quickly proved himself to be in way over his head as a candidate for national office, as he himself later acknowledged.
Riding in a fighter jet and getting shot down did not qualify Stockdale to be president.
Vigilante:
But. . .but. . .but. . . He's a *hero* !!!
Well first of all SAM's of the Russian kind used during the Vietnam conflict are radar guided not heat seekers.
The rest of your article I take tongue in cheek which is ok by me. Ironically Wes Clark in shooting his mouth off as a surrogate for Obama, pretty much shot down any chance he had [slim] for a VP slot. Fact he probably couldn't get Federal Dogcatcher now. Americans are funny that way — they don't cotton to seeing veterans dissed in any fashion. That has political consequences.
As to whether McCain is qualified. He is just based on the requirements for office. Whether he deserves the office is another matter. There are plenty of positions he has taken then rankle me.

You crack me up.
“Americans are funny that way — they don't cotton to seeing veterans dissed in any fashion.”
I guess you didn't note the purple heart band-aid in the photo of the Republican delegate at the top of the entry? And you never heard of the “Swift Boat Veterans For Truth”? And the name “Max Cleland” rings no bells? Tens of millions of Americans love to shit on veterans, if the veterans are Democrats running for office. And that's a fact, Jack.
By the way, now that the McCain camp is manufacturing outrage around the clock about General Clark's perfectly innocuous remark, note who they've called out of the woodwork to wield the long knives. Why, the guy from the Swift Boat campaign! What a remarkable coinky-dink.
“Americans are funny that way — they don't cotton to seeing veterans dissed in any fashion.” Gawd, that's the funniest thing I've read in weeks. I actually laughed out loud.

Au contraire! John McCain's sense of entitlement is not an adequate test of presidential caliber. But judgment is. McCain is George Bush III.
