My Five Minutes of Fame: “Why My 21st Century Cellular Network Has A Princess Phone.”

This week, on “Five Minutes With Harold Feld,” I cover handset exclusivity, my iPhone envy, and the inevitable “I'm a Mac/I'm a PC” joke. Also, I want to point out the “schlumpy” is a fine look, thank you!

Stay tuned . . . .

Harold,

Good video. I've been thinking a lot about this topic lately, and I don't even use a cell phone. It's certainly the ginormous back door by which the telcos can gut Net Neutrality, and they're not too subtle about that.

But two questions for the rest of the viewers out there:

1) Don't you think Harold owed it to us to have an actual “Princess Phone” as a prop in this vid? I feel a little cheated on that.

2) Does the way Harold's right hand is positioned remind anybody else of “Little Johnny”?http://tinyurl.com/yh6p2h

I'm sympathetic, but doesn't allowing exclusive deals help drive innovation in the handset market? If the iPhone could be used on any network, would there have been as much space for the G1, the Pre, or some of those new Blackberries? Your most irrefutable argument, it seems to me, is that smaller carriers are hurt when only the big carriers can get the coolest phones, which means that rural consumers don't get the coolest phones.
